Creato, prodotto e diretto dall'attore radiofonico / regista Elliott Lewis, il programma è stato una vera serie di true crime storico, esaminando i crimini e gli omicidi del passato. È nata dall'interesse personale di Lewis sii famosi casi di omicidio e ha adottato un approccio documentaristico al soggetto, ricreando con cura i fatti, personaggi e l'atmosfera del periodo.
I crimini presi in esame coprono un arco di tempo che varia dalla Grecia antica al tardo XIX secolo Americano. Ogni episodio della serie è stato co-scritto da Morton Fine e David Friedkin, in consultazione con Lewis.
I casi variava da omicidi famosi (di Abraham Lincoln, Leon Trotsky, e Giulio Cesare) e la vita (e spesso morti) del calibro di Cesare Borgia e Barbanera a casi più oscuri, come Betsabea Spooner, che ha ucciso il marito Joshua Spooner nel 1778 e divenne la prima donna processata e giustiziata in America.
Il carattere unico di continuare era l'ospite / narratore, Thomas Hyland, introdotto dal presentatore come un "conoscitore del crimine, studente di violenza, e narratore di omicidi", interpretato da Lou Merrill.
