"From Adler to Amberley"

Tradizionalmente, il canone di Sherlock Holmes è composto da 56 racconti e quattro romanzi scritti da Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

In questo contesto, il termine "canone" è un tentativo di distinguere tra le opere originali di Doyle e le opere successive di altri autori che usano gli stessi personaggi.

In questa serie di episodi dal titolo "Sherlock Holmes: From Adler to Amberley", Karl Coppack presenterà ed esaminerà, con l'aiuto di ospiti speciali, i 56 racconti di Sherlock Holmes in ordine di pubblicazione.

 ¹ - La prima edizione londinese delle Memorie nel 1894 non includeva "The Adventure of the Cardboard Box", sebbene tutte e dodici le storie fossero apparse sulla rivista The Strand. La prima edizione degli Stati Uniti includeva la storia, ma è stata sostituita molto rapidamente con un'edizione rivista che l'ha omessa.

Il motivo alla base della soppressione non è chiaro. In Gran Bretagna la storia fu apparentemente rimossa su richiesta di Doyle poiché includeva l'adulterio e quindi non era adatto per i lettori più giovani. Questo potrebbe anche essere stato la causa della rapida rimozione della storia dall'edizione americana e alcune fonti affermano che gli editori credevano che la storia fosse troppo scandalosa per il pubblico americano.

Di conseguenza, questa storia non è stata ripubblicata negli Stati Uniti fino a molti anni dopo, quando è stata aggiunta a His Last Bow. Ancora oggi, la maggior parte delle edizioni americane del canone lo includono con His Last Bow, mentre la maggior parte delle edizioni britanniche mantiene la storia nella sua posizione originale in The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes.

Inoltre, quando la storia è stata rimossa dalle Memorie, le sue pagine iniziali, in cui Holmes emula Dupin, sono state trasferite all'inizio di "The Adventure of the Resident Patient". In alcune successive edizioni statunitensi delle Memorie, che omettono ancora "The Adventure of the Cardboard Box", questo trasferimento appare ancora.
